Yes, it's true, I'll be on sabbatical this year till August of 2012. Printana will be a bit slow until I return, but I'll post some info regarding what I'm up to from time to time. Here's my latest print for the State of Printmaking Portfolio.

Woodcut Madness at Frogman's Press

"Mardi-gator", reduction linocut

This course will introduce students to a range of techniques and strategies for developing color woodcuts. Working from a key image each student will be creating a color woodcut using a method of their choosing. Reduction woodcut techniques (working from a single block), Chiaroscuro woodcuts (multi-blocks), monotype and stenciling approaches will all be covered. Students will learn various cutting techniques using traditional and nontraditional tools, transfer techniques, registration methods, ink modification, printing and inking applications. Demonstrations and discussions will be further supplemented with Power Points showcasing a broad range of both historical and contemporary artistic approaches to the medium.

MATRIX PRESS: Master Prints is currently on view at the Emerson Cultural Center in Bozeman, MT.
Exhibition reception is February 11th from 5-8 pm with a gallery talk by James Bailey

This exhibition includes approximately 39 prints created through MATRIX Press, by nationally recognized artists over the course of the past twelve years. The prints from the MATRIX Press collection represent a broad range of artistic and technical approaches to the print.

Artists represented in this exhibition include those who have continued the activist tradition of printmaking such as Richard Mock, best known for his cutting political prints that appeared in the New York Times Op-Ed section from 1980-1996 and Miriam Schapiro who was one of the pioneering artists in the Feminist Art movement to Tom Huck, known for his intricately cut woodcuts inspired by the likes of Albrecht Durer. In addition, Colorful abstractions by Arizona artist and past UM alumni John Armstrong show a softer approach to the medium with his whimsical forms, which often reference the landscape. Chicago based artist Tony Fitzpatrick utilizes 50’s style tattoo art in his color etchings, while Canadian Artist Peter Von Tiesenhausen’s boat forms float mysteriously on metallic fields.

Printmaking Exhibitions by UM Graduate Students Stephanie Johnsen and Jack Metcalf

Jack Metcalf approaches art like it's the third act to a magic trick: the reappearance of an object after its disappearance. Last summer the University of Montana art graduate student discovered fliers hanging on campus with a snapshot of a drawing: a tortoise with the head of a bird. Underneath the photo of the drawing a note said: "Have you seen this drawing? Last seen in room 401 in flat drawer." Metcalf didn't recognize the artist or the drawing, but he took one of the posters back to his UM art studio in the basement of the Fine Arts building and created a drawing based on the lost piece.......

Thomas Kinkade Mugshot

Thomas Kinkade DUI, Bankruptcy, Fraud – The ‘Painter of Light’ is apparently in a dark period. He has recently had to file for bankruptcy to escape retribution in relation to fraud charges in which the world-renowned painter was successfully charged with bilking galleries out of millions.

On June 2, 2010, one of Thomas Kinkade’s company,Pacific Metro LLC, filed for bankruptcy protection had to file for bankruptcy protection after art gallery owners successfully pressed fraud charges against the company. They, along with hundreds of other creditors, were said to be owed millions by the famous painter’s art empire. Kinkade is said to beone of the world’s wealthiest artist. He is certainly one of the most collectible artists in the world. He is known for homey landscapes and Christian motifs. Now, it seems, he will be known for a quick succession of legal problems.

Kinkade, 52-years-old is a native of Placerville, California. He was pulled over and arrested on DUI charges on Friday night, June 11, 2010, outside of Carmel, California, where he owns a home. This on the heels of his company’s legal troubles.

A Monterey County sheriff’s deputy stopped Kinkade for a minor traffic violation. According to the California Highway Patrol spokesperson, after an initial conversation about the violation, the deputy gave Kinkade a sobriety test, which he failed.

Kinkade Prints

Kinkade stopped selling original paintings in 1997, wanting to keep his original collection together. Since 1997, Kinkade has sold lithographic reproductions of his work on canvas in an array of prices ranging from $300 to $15,000. Kinkade employs a team of painters that place highlights on each print, adding an individual touch and a texture more similar to oil on canvas paintings. Kinkade creates around 12 paintings a year as of 2010.

Warning

The mainstream art world does not hold Kinkade in high esteem. Contemporary dealers in the United States and worldwide consider Kinkade's work overly commercialized, appealing to low cultural values and poorly made. This is an opinion exemplified by Joan Didion, who wrote: "A Kinkade painting was typically rendered in slightly surreal pastels. It typically featured a cottage or a house of such insistent coziness as to seem actually sinister, suggestive of a trap designed to attract Hansel and Gretel. Every window was lit, to lurid effect, as if the interior of the structure might be on fire." Accordingly, individuals interested in selling or valuing their Kinkade prints should stay within the Kinkade market.

The Oil & Water Dont’ Mix poster by British designer Anthony Burill is printed with oil collected from the soiled beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. The limited edition posters ( 200 prints ) are being sold to support CRCL or The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the Gulf of Mexico’s coastal wetlands.

"Transparent God", 2009, cut paper

Lately I have worked almost exclusively with white paper in different objects, paper cuts, installations and performances. A large part of my work is made from A4 sheets of paper. It is probably the most common and consumed media used for carrying information today. This is why we rarely notice the actual materiality of the A4 paper. By taking away all the information and starting from scratch using the blank white A4 paper sheet for my creations, I feel I have found a material that we are all able to relate to, and at the same time the A4 paper sheet is neutral and open to fill with different meaning. The thin white paper gives the paper sculptures a frailty that underlines the tragic and romantic theme of my works.

The paper cut sculptures explore the probable and magical transformation of the flat sheet of paper into figures that expand into the space surrounding them. The negative and absent 2 dimensional space left by the cut, points out the contrast to the 3 dimensional reality it creates, even though the figures still stick to their origin without the possibility of escaping. In that sense there is also an aspect of something tragic in many of the cuts.

Umibozu

For as long as there have been boats there has been a fear of the deep. Sailors tell tales of the Kraken or the Leviathan, gargantuan creatures with tentacular arms that emerge from the gloom to drag down ships. No doubt these sea monsters are based on the giant squid that are sometimes found washed ashore. In Japanese folklore the Umibozu has a large round head said to resemble the shaven heads of Buddhist monks, more like an octopus than a squid. The name Umibozu is derived from the characters for the sea and for monk. The Umibozu is like a lost soul seeking vengeance and it will capsize the boat of anyone who dares to speak with it.

Takeji Asano is best known today for designing landscape woodblock prints for the publisher Unsodo. Born in Kyoto, Asano graduated from the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1919 and from the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1923. One of his early teachers was the artist and printmaker Tsuchida Bakusen, with whom he studied Japanese-style painting. Asano helped to organize the Kyoto Creative Print Society (Kyoto Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai) in 1929.

Doug Anderson will be installing his exhibition entitled "Asphodel" in the Gallery of Visual Arts.

Artist Statement:

Asphodel is a mythical place of the Greek underworld where souls are sent to await judgment after having been ferried across the River Styx. Souls judged to be a combination of both virtuous and evil deeds remain in this grey place to wander aimlessly and without memory, having drunk from the River of Lethe (Forgetfulness). In these vast and gloomy fields grows only the Asphodel, a white flower, which is consumed by the dead. The truly virtuous souls, those blessed by the gods, pass on to the Elysian Fields. Here souls retained their memories and enjoyed pleasurable feasts and games. Those souls judged to be truly cursed are cast into the depths of Tartarus. Each soul spends eternity suffering a punishment that relates to his or her earthly crimes.

Yes Disco and Funk will be alive and well this Friday, December 11th beginning at 4:00 up in the Print Studio (FA 403).

Come join us, as we print T-shirts, prints and the like to the hot sounds of Disco. The movie Saturday Night Fever will be showing, along with music from the BeeGees, Hot Chocolate, Earth, Wind and Fire and many more.

All students are welcome. Bring a blank T-shirt to print on, all supplies will be provided.

The Montana Museum of Art and Culture has a wonderful print exhibition entitled "By the People, For the People: New Deal Prints from the 1930's and 1940's currently on view.

Sylvia's gorgeously creepy paintings are brimming with a mixture of sexual provocation and consternation. Images of beautiful women resembling Marie Antoinette in Día de los Muertos face paint. Miss Ji’s interest in art was implanted at a very young age when she would look through her mother’s sketchbooks and watch her father paint. In her art, she explores themes of beauty, sexual provocation, and social notions of femininity, juxtaposed against the dystopian reality of modern cities to create highly charged paintings of women. Some of her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or just nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting beauty. She graduated with distinction in 2005 from the Academy of Art University of San Francisco with a Bachelors in Illustration and had her first ambitious and successful solo show while still in her last year of school. Since then she has been in high demand, keeping continuously engaged in an onslought of numerous shows on the West Coast.

BLU in Bogota, Columbia

Artist Blu shows off his latest and greatest street piece in the streets of Bogota, Columbia. As witty as ever, both mural sized artworks showcase a socially conscience theme with the drug/death references. Both were put in place for “Memoria Canalla”. Definitely another great installation for one of the more well-respected street artists in the scene.
